Thoughts on a Night Walk

It’s 11:30 p.m. and we just got in from our evening walk with the dog.  It’s a good time to walk for many reasons.  First of all, there are few if any cars.  Second, the night sounds are lovely.  Third, after the dog claims the neighborhood as her own I get to sleep through the night.  Fourth, the flowering trees and bushes are more fragrant at night.  Fifth, we get to enjoy the moon, the stars and satellites. Sixth, the city lights in the valley are lovely.  This evening we passed a lilac bush in full bloom.  I was inebriated just by walking near it.  It was otherworldly.  The most expensive lilac perfume is a very poor second to the real thing.

As we came into the cloud of lilac fragrance one of my favorite verses popped into my head.  It’s found at the close of II Corinthians 2.  Paul wrote, “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life.

It contains some interesting perspectives on a true Christian’s affect on God, on the saved and on the lost.  God loves the way we smell.  Fellow Christians, real Christians, rejoice in our walk.  We offend the lost.  While I can understand why, the latter fills my heart with sadness.
