Pulchritudinous

The English language is rich in words that describe good things. A short list of them would be pretty, delicious, beautiful, lovely, gorgeous, exquisite, cute, attractive, comely, handsome and ravishing. These are good words to know. They come in very handy on important occasions. Here is one more to add to our list of verbal tools. The word is pulchritudinous. It means charming, graceful and beautiful to behold.

Just imagine that golden moment when all other words seem old and overused and you dig into your word bag and say, “You look pulchritudinous tonight.” Be careful. You might need to be prepared to duck. She might not know what you just said and the reaction might not be what you wanted.

Words are marvelous things. The more one knows the more variety can be used to express one’s feelings and situation. Words are tools that transport ideas from one mind to another. They convey feelings, emotions and thoughts. It is no wonder in chapter one of the Gospel of John Jesus is referred to as “The Word.” He was the conveyor of God’s identity to us. He spoke and acted out God’s thoughts. He told us that in God’s eyes we are pulchritudinous. You have to like that!
